BIO
Anders Paulsson - Biography (English)
The soprano saxophone is a rare and exotic voice in the classical world and Anders Paulsson is one of the first pioneers commissioning new music for it from living composers.
After studies with Jean-Marie Londeix, Joseph Allard and Bob Mintzer, he made his Carnegie Hall début in 1992, with the premiere of a new work written for him by American composer David Conte. Anders has performed hundreds of concerts as a soloist in over 20 countries.
Recent career highlights include a live broadcast on Swedish Radio of Anders Eliasson Concerto with the Norrland Opera Symphony Orchestra; Mei-Ann Chen conductor, recitals with mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter in Wigmore Hall London and Concertgebouw Amsterdam, recitals with organist Andrew Canning in Kitakyushu, Japan and Svetlanov Hall Moscow, Sven-David Sandström 4 Pieces with Swedish Wind Orchestra and a concert tour with string orchestra Musica Vitae in Spain starting in Palau di Musica i Valencia.
His performance as a soloist with the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, B Tommy Andersson Reflections, is evidence that it is possible to bring the classical soprano saxophone to the highest musical level.
Adolf Sax invented the soprano saxophone in 1841 with the intention of combining the power of the trumpet with the technical fluidity of the flute. Thus music for these related instruments translates well to the soprano saxophone. Paulsson has performed the Mozart oboe concerto on soprano saxophone with S:t Petersburg Philharmonic; Fabio Mastrangelo conductor.
He has premiered the Peeter Vähi concerto with Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Andres Mustonen, Nils Lindberg Mythological Portraits with DalaSinfoniettan & Östgöta Wind Orchestra; Bjarte Engesett, David Chaitkin Concerto with the Stockton Symphony Orchestra USA; Peter Jaffe, Fredrik Högberg Concerto Sundsvall Chamber Orchestra; Lan Shui.
Swedish Television broadcast the premiere of the Jonathan Sheffer Concerto with Anders Paulsson and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Petter Sundkvist.
As a composer, Anders Paulsson was awarded “The Golden Clapperboard” for best original film music in 1994 together with Johan Söderqvist. His music has been performed by Swedish Radio Choir conducted by Gustaf Sjökvist, Real Group S:t Johannes Chamber Choir/ Karin Oldgren and S:t Jacobs Chamber choir/ Gary Graden. His compositions & arrangements are published by Gehrmans www.gehrmans.se.
In 1990 he became musical friends with the great bassist Red Mitchell who generously gave encouraging support and mentorship. The fruits of this collaboration can be heard on the CDs “A sound for the 90´s” and “Lindberg - Mitchell - Paulsson”.
This friendship led him to piano maverick Roger Kellaway who has also composed original music especially for Anders soprano saxophone performed in Maybeck Hall San Francisco.
Anders Paulsson won admittance to the Royal Academy of Music in 1978 and later continued his studies in France where he won the Gold and Silver medals at the 1982 Concours Fin d´Anneé in Bordeaux and was awarded a major ITT International Scholarship for graduate studies in jazz improvisation and composition at Manhattan School of Music, New York City.
He also likes to teach masterclasses on the soprano saxophone and to share the wonderful music written for the instrument with other players. He has spent many summers as guest artist at the Aspen Music Festival & Musik vid Siljan and has also collaborated with distinguished artists Håkan Hagegård, Alice Babs & Gunnar Idenstam Midsummer Night´s Mass.
Many of his performances have been broadcast on national television and radio and his recordings have received high acclaim from music critics and audiences worldwide.
